LOS ANGELES — Firefighters with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a vacant one-story commercial building on South Santa Fe Avenue in downtown Los Angeles.
The emergency was reported at approximately 10:04 p.m., with firefighters dispatched to the area of 900–910 S. Santa Fe Ave. near Seventh Street. When the first crews arrived, they reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of the building and determined that a fire was burning inside a back room.
Firefighters quickly launched an offensive operation to attack the blaze from inside the structure. Multiple LAFD units responded to the incident as crews worked to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other portions of the building or nearby properties.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that firefighters declared a knockdown at approximately 10:18 p.m., meaning the main body of the fire had been brought under control. The department said the fire was extinguished approximately 14 minutes after the initial 911 call.
Officials reported no extension of the fire beyond the area of origin and no injuries. No patients were found at the scene. The building was described by arriving firefighters as a vacant commercial structure.
The incident prompted a substantial emergency response from LAFD units, including engine companies, truck companies, a battalion chief and medical-response personnel. Firefighters remained at the scene after the knockdown to check for remaining hot spots and ensure the structure was safe.
The cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding how it started were not immediately disclosed. Investigators will determine the origin of the blaze and whether any additional factors contributed to the incident.
The Santa Fe Avenue fire is among several structure fires that have required LAFD crews to respond to commercial properties in downtown Los Angeles. Authorities have not reported any fatalities connected with this incident.
