Patel’s presence was notable not only because of the optics of a law-enforcement leader joining a locker-room celebration but also because of questions about how the trip to Italy was arranged and paid for. 

Reporting indicates Patel traveled to the Olympics with official engagements on his schedule and that at least some travel used agency resources, which prompted scrutiny about use of taxpayer-funded travel for what many saw as a personal appearance. 

Critics argued a director should prioritize immediate domestic crises and avoid mixing high-level law-enforcement roles with public partying abroad. Supporters framed his attendance as a show of patriotism and support for American athletes.

The reaction split along familiar lines.
