Mark McLane PEI Obituary: Cornwall-Meadowbank MLA and Minister of Finance Passes Away

Prince Edward Island is mourning the loss of Mark McLane, the MLA for Cornwall-Meadowbank and Minister of Finance, who has passed away, leaving a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and the broader PEI community. 

McLane, first elected in a 2021 by-election and re-elected in the 2023 general election, was widely recognized for his dedication, empathy, and unwavering commitment to serving the people of Prince Edward Island.

Throughout his tenure, McLane distinguished himself as a trusted public servant. In addition to his role as Minister of Finance, he served on the Standing Committee on Education and Economic Growth, where his insight, collaborative approach, and thoughtful guidance earned him respect among colleagues and constituents alike. 



Known for his steady presence, McLane approached every challenge with humility, optimism, and a focus on finding common ground. His leadership style combined professionalism with genuine warmth, ensuring that everyone he worked with felt valued and supported.

Before entering politics, Mark McLane had a successful career in business and community leadership. He served as Executive Director of Golf PEI and was past president of iWave Information Systems. 

Earlier in his career, he founded PrinterWorks, a company that earned him the 1999 Business Development Bank of Canada Young Entrepreneur Award. Beyond his professional achievements, McLane dedicated countless hours to volunteer work. 

He served as chair of the Island Waste Management Corporation, was a board member with Big Brothers Big Sisters of PEI, and supported the Stars for Life Foundation. He also coached and managed local sports, including ringette, field hockey, and soccer, leaving a lasting impact on the island’s youth.

A devoted husband to Margie and loving father to their three daughters, McLane balanced a demanding career with family life, embodying integrity, dedication, and community spirit. 

He graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1993 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and carried the lessons of his education into every aspect of his life—whether in business, politics, or volunteering.

Mark McLane’s contributions to Prince Edward Island extended far beyond his professional and political accomplishments. Friends and colleagues remember him as someone who could always be counted on for thoughtful advice, support, or simply a kind word. 

His leadership, generosity, and infectious warmth touched countless lives and left a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of Islanders. The people of PEI honor Mark McLane’s dedication to public service and community engagement. 

His passing is a tremendous loss, and condolences have poured in from across the province to his wife, Margie, their daughters, his father Dave, sister Kristina, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. 

Mark McLane will be remembered not only for his accomplishments as MLA and Minister of Finance but for the integrity, compassion, and humanity he brought to every role he undertook.
