The Florida Atlantic University community is mourning the loss of wide receiver Jymetre Hester, whose death has left teammates, coaches, and loved ones in deep sorrow.
His passing has also deeply affected his hometown of Belle Glade, where he was widely known and supported throughout his football journey. As tributes continue to pour in, Hester is being remembered not only for his contributions on the field but also for his character, determination, and the bright future many believed lay ahead of him.
Hester played as a junior during the 2023 season, taking part in several games for the Owls. He contributed as both a wide receiver and a special teams player, demonstrating versatility and commitment to his team.

Over the course of the season, he recorded receptions against Monmouth and USF, while also appearing in matchups against Ohio, Clemson, Illinois, Tulsa, UTSA, and Charlotte. Though his statistical output was modest, coaches and teammates often highlighted his work ethic, discipline, and readiness to step up whenever called upon.
Before transferring to FAU, Hester began his collegiate football career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. It was there that he honed his athletic abilities and developed into a player capable of competing at the Division I level. His journey reflected perseverance and a strong commitment to growth, qualities that defined both his athletic and personal life.
Hester’s football roots ran deep. He was the son of Jessie Hester, a former NFL standout who also coached him during his high school years, helping shape his skills and passion for the game.
He was also the cousin of Devin Hester, widely regarded as one of the greatest return specialists in NFL history. This strong football lineage played a significant role in his development and love for the sport.
During his high school career, Hester stood out as one of the top players in his region. He earned recognition on The Palm Beach Post Super 11 team and received all-conference and all-state honors.
His junior season was particularly impressive, as he recorded 45 receptions for 797 yards and 11 touchdowns, showcasing his playmaking ability and potential. Born on May 16, 2001, Jymetre Hester is remembered as more than just an athlete.
Friends and teammates describe him as humble, focused, and supportive — someone who brought positive energy to those around him. His passing is a significant loss to his family, his team, and the broader community.
