DOE Employee Naya Brown, Bronx Man Charged in Fatal Bronx Shooting That Killed Father

BRONX, N.Y. — A Department of Education employee and a Bronx man have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the deadly shooting of 44‑year‑old Keon Gill, a beloved husband and father, authorities said. The arrest has shaken the Kingsbridge community and renewed attention on public safety in parts of New York City.

Police sources say 26‑year‑old Naya Brown, who worked for the New York City Department of Education, was taken into custody at her Bronx home on March 3 by the Regional Fugitive Task Force. 

She joins 37‑year‑old Pernell Warren, who was previously arrested in connection with the Jan. 25 shooting near West 242nd Street and Broadway. Both face murder charges in the death of Gill.

The incident unfolded shortly before 3 a.m. after Gill and his brother, Luis, left a local bar where Gill had been celebrating his birthday with friends, according to police and family accounts. 

Moments after the gathering ended, gunfire erupted on the street. Gill was struck in the chest and later died at the hospital, while his 35‑year‑old brother was shot in the leg and is expected to recover.

At this stage, authorities have not released a motive for the shooting or detailed Brown’s exact alleged role in the crime. Warren faces additional charges, including manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Gill’s family remembers him as a devoted father and gentle spirit whose life revolved around his four children. “His world was his kids. They were his life,” the mother of his children said in an earlier interview. Friends described Gill as humble, warm, and committed to his family and community.

The Bronx district attorney’s office has urged anyone with information or video footage from the night of the shooting to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement officials continue to review surveillance footage and interview witnesses in hopes of bolstering the case against both defendants.

The arrests have sparked discussions about violence and community safety in the Bronx, where gun violence has been an ongoing concern for residents and local officials alike. Community leaders have called for increased cooperation with police and strengthened support services for local youth to prevent future tragedies.

As the legal process moves forward, Brown and Warren are expected to appear in Bronx Supreme Court for arraignment on the murder charges. If convicted, they could face significant prison terms given the serious nature of the offenses and the loss of life involved.
