MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Daniel “Dan” Paavola, a beloved professor at Concordia University Wisconsin and a dedicated pastor, died tragically in a motorcycle accident earlier this week.
He was 45. The accident, which occurred on a rural road near Milwaukee, has left family, friends, and the university community mourning the loss of a man remembered for his intellectual curiosity, compassion, and commitment to service.
Paavola joined Concordia University Wisconsin’s faculty in 2005, where he taught courses in theology, pastoral studies, and ethics. Students described him as an inspiring educator whose passion for teaching went beyond the classroom.
“Professor Paavola had a way of connecting with students on a personal level,” said one former student. “He challenged us academically but always encouraged us spiritually. His mentorship shaped the way many of us live our faith today.”

He earned his undergraduate degree from Marquette University before completing a Master of Divinity. His dual commitment to scholarship and ministry made him a bridge between academic study and pastoral care, a role he embraced wholeheartedly throughout his life.
Outside of work, Paavola was an avid motorcyclist, often sharing his love of the open road with friends and fellow riders. Family members say his adventurous spirit and love for life were evident in everything he did.
He is survived by his wife, two children, and a wide circle of family and friends who remember him as kind, generous, and full of joy. Concordia University Wisconsin released a statement expressing sorrow over Paavola’s sudden passing.
“Daniel Paavola was an integral part of our faculty and our community,” the statement read. “His impact on students, colleagues, and congregants will be felt for years to come. We grieve with his family and offer our deepest condolences.”
Funeral arrangements are being planned by his family, who have requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to local charities supporting education and youth mentorship.
