Charlie Erdmann, a standout lacrosse player for the University of Vermont (UVM) Catamounts, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of athletic excellence, dedication, and leadership on and off the field.
Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, Charlie’s passion for lacrosse was evident from an early age, and his journey through the sport reflected both talent and determination.
Erdmann joined the University of Vermont after an impressive career at the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts, where he was a four-year letterwinner and served as team captain in his senior year.
He earned the team’s Most Valuable Player award twice and was recognized on the All-New England Team in 2015 and 2016. Notably, he holds the Berkshire School record for ground balls, totaling 162 over his high school career. In addition to lacrosse, Charlie played football, showcasing his versatility as an athlete.
At UVM, Charlie quickly established himself as a force at the faceoff X. During his freshman season in 2017, he guided the Catamounts in all 13 games at the faceoff position, posting a .538 winning percentage, which ranked third in the America East Conference.
His ability to control possession was matched by his skill in scooping ground balls, leading the team with 62 ground balls for an average of 4.77 per game—also third in the conference. He made a memorable collegiate debut against Furman on February 2, 2017, going 11-for-21 on faceoffs.
Highlights of his freshman year include a 15-for-22 day at Dartmouth on February 28 and an 18-for-23 performance at Sacred Heart on March 11. Charlie also recorded his first collegiate assist against Holy Cross on February 18.
Over his collegiate career, Erdmann continued to be a key contributor for the Catamounts. He finished a recent season third in the America East with a .504 success rate at the faceoff X, going 133-for-264, including an outstanding 16-for-19 performance against UMBC on April 27.
His consistency, focus, and competitive spirit made him a vital part of Vermont’s lacrosse program and a respected teammate and leader. Charlie Erdmann’s personal life reflected the same strong family values that shaped his athletic journey.
He was the son of Jeff and Barbara Erdmann and had two siblings, Tom and Will. His father, Jeff, played lacrosse at Ohio Wesleyan, and his uncle, Greg Erdmann, is a 1987 alumnus of UVM, highlighting a family tradition of athletic and academic commitment.
While at the University of Vermont, Charlie pursued his education with the same dedication he brought to sports, though he remained undecided on a major. His time at UVM was marked not only by athletic achievement but also by the friendships, mentorships, and community connections he fostered.
