A fatal pedestrian accident in New Jersey is currently under investigation after a tragic crash occurred Wednesday night in Monroe Township, leaving one woman dead.
Authorities responded to the incident along U.S. Route 322, also known as South Black Horse Pike, near South Main Street, where a vehicle struck a pedestrian attempting to cross the roadway.
The Monroe Township Police Department confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:36 PM on March 4, 2026, following reports of a motor vehicle crash involving pedestrians. Emergency responders arrived quickly and began assessing the situation while securing the roadway.
Details of the Route 55 / Route 322 Crash
According to preliminary findings released by investigators, a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound along Route 322 at the time of the collision. The vehicle was being driven by a 25-year-old woman from Blackwood, New Jersey.

Police say the crash occurred when two pedestrians attempted to cross the roadway in an area that did not have designated pedestrian crossing accommodations. During the crossing, the Jeep’s front driver-side area struck a 33-year-old woman from Williamstown, New Jersey in the inside travel lane.
Authorities indicated that the driver stopped immediately after the collision. She pulled her vehicle onto the shoulder of the roadway and attempted to render aid to the injured pedestrian while emergency responders were on the way.
Victim Transported to Hospital
Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after the crash and transported the victim to Jefferson Washington Township Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the woman’s injuries proved fatal.
Hospital officials later confirmed that the victim was pronounced deceased at approximately 9:19 PM, less than an hour after the initial crash was reported.
Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s name at this time, as officials often wait until family members have been properly notified before sharing the identity of a deceased individual.
Investigation Ongoing
The crash is currently being investigated by Patrolman Ryan Hoffman of the Monroe Township Police Traffic Safety Bureau. Investigators will examine multiple factors related to the accident, including road conditions, vehicle speed, visibility, and the circumstances surrounding the pedestrians’ attempt to cross the highway.
Because the incident occurred in an area without a marked crosswalk or pedestrian crossing infrastructure, officials will also analyze whether lighting conditions or roadway design may have played a role in the crash.
