The Morgantown, West Virginia community is mourning the untimely loss of Matthew William Powell, who passed away on February 24, 2026, at the age of 19. Born on May 10, 2006, in Morgantown, Matthew touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his integrity, humor, and unwavering compassion. He is remembered as a devoted son, loving brother, and loyal friend.
Matthew was a 2024 graduate of University High School, where he distinguished himself academically and athletically. As a member of the National Honor Society and the school’s track team, he showed both dedication and perseverance.
Matthew’s love for learning carried into his college years as he pursued a degree in psychology at West Virginia University (WVU), where he was a sophomore at the time of his passing. He had a bright future ahead of him, marked by curiosity, determination, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Outside of academics, Matthew was passionate about WVU sports, regularly cheering for his favorite teams and enjoying the excitement of Mountaineer games. Fitness and health were also central to his life, and he loved working out and staying active.
Above all, Matthew cherished the time spent with his family and friends, creating countless memories filled with laughter, support, and connection. Those who knew him often spoke of his kindness, easy-going humor, and the way he could light up any room he entered.
Matthew is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William K. and Joyce Miller, whose love and guidance shaped much of his early life. He is survived by his devoted parents, Matt and Laura Powell, and his sister Megan, who meant the world to him.
He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Rodney and Kathy Powell, as well as his aunt Angela (John) Durig, uncle Mark (Courtney) Powell, and cousins Brayden and Brynley Powell. Matthew’s family remembers him not only as a bright, loving young man but as a source of joy, laughter, and inspiration.
Family and friends are invited to honor Matthew’s life at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, located at 10 S. High St., Morgantown, WV 26501. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, from 2 pm to 4 pm and again from 6 pm to 8 pm, and on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 1 pm until the funeral service at 2 pm, with Pastor Brian Knight officiating.
Following the service, Matthew will be laid to rest at East Oak Grove Cemetery, where family, friends, and the community can gather to pay their final respects.
Matthew William Powell’s life, though tragically short, was full of love, laughter, and meaningful connections. His legacy of compassion, integrity, and warmth will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
