Motorists faced major disruption following an M2 traffic accident today after a three-car collision brought westbound traffic to a standstill during the morning rush hour. The incident occurred shortly after 8am on the M2 westbound between junction 5 for the A249 Sittingbourne and Stockbury Roundabout and junction 4 for the A278 Hoath Way in Gillingham, a key stretch of road heavily used by commuters.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, with police, fire crews, and paramedics working together to manage the situation and assist those involved. Due to the severity of the collision and safety concerns on the carriageway, one lane was initially closed, and traffic was temporarily stopped. This led to extensive congestion, with queues stretching for around nine miles at the height of the delays, reaching back toward junction 6 for Faversham.
The impact was also felt on surrounding roads, particularly the A249, where traffic built up from the Bobbing Roundabout in Sittingbourne as drivers attempted to divert or were caught in the knock-on delays. Many motorists reported being delayed by more than an hour, causing frustration and disruption to work and school journeys.
National Highways confirmed that traffic was held while oil spilt during the collision was cleared from the road surface. A spokesperson said the clean-up operation was essential to ensure the safety of drivers before lanes could be reopened.
