Sergio Lopes of Richmond Hill Identified as Victim in Fatal Vaughan Plaza Shooting, Leaving Community in Shock and Mourning

Sergio Lopes, a 65‑year‑old resident of Richmond Hill, Ontario, has tragically died after being shot multiple times in a targeted daytime shooting at a commercial plaza in Vaughan, Ontario. 

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2026, near the intersection of Winges Road and Rowntree Dairy Road, close to Highway 7 and Highway 400. 

Responding officers found him suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a business; he was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Mr. Lopes’s death has deeply unsettled the local communities of Richmond Hill and Vaughan, particularly friends, family, and those who knew him personally. 

Described by police as a targeted homicide, the motives behind the shooting have not yet been publicly disclosed, and no suspects have been identified. 

Investigators from the York Regional Police Homicide Unit continue to work on the case and are urging anyone with information—such as security footage or witness accounts—to come forward to aid in the ongoing inquiry.

Shortly after the shooting, police received an unrelated report of a black SUV on fire on Kipling Avenue, north of Woodbridge Avenue. Investigators confirmed that the burned vehicle matched the description of the vehicle believed to have fled the scene after the shooting, though it was unoccupied at the time and no additional injuries were reported. 

The news of Sergio Lopes’s death has prompted an outpouring of concern and condolences from community members, many of whom are grappling with questions about public safety and the senseless nature of the violence. 

Although authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time, the incident serves as a solemn reminder of the impact such violence has on families and communities.
