The Pittsburgh arts and education community is mourning the passing of Larry Cervi, a beloved teacher, director, choreographer, and founder of the East End Kids, whose lifelong dedication to the performing arts shaped generations of young performers.
His death marks the end of an extraordinary era in local theater and arts education, but his influence will continue to resonate for decades to come through the countless lives he touched.
Larry Cervi devoted more than 60 years to training teenagers in the arts, earning a reputation as both a demanding professional and a deeply caring mentor.
He believed in discipline, preparation, and excellence, but always balanced those values with encouragement and compassion. Students often recall that he saw potential in them before they saw it in themselves, pushing them to grow not only as performers, but as confident, responsible individuals.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Theatre from the University of Pittsburgh, credentials that anchored a career defined by passion and service.
Larry began his teaching career as an English teacher at Swissvale High School before spending 21 impactful years teaching Speech and Drama at Churchill Area High School.
There, he also directed theater productions that became formative experiences for many students. His dedication to education extended to the Community College of Allegheny County’s Boyce Campus, where he continued to share his knowledge and love for performance.
Larry’s influence stretched far beyond traditional classrooms. He served as choreographer for two major university marching bands and directed competitive drill teams, bringing theatrical storytelling and precision to large-scale performances.
In 1986, he founded the Larry Cervi School of Performing Arts, creating a space where young performers could train seriously in dance, acting, and musical theater. Four years later, he established the East End Kids, a professional teen song-and-dance ensemble that became a hallmark of excellence in the region.
His artistic direction of high school musicals at Gateway, Riverview, and West Allegheny High Schools resulted in numerous CLO Gene Kelly Award nominations, a testament to his vision and leadership.
He also directed productions at North Hills, Montour, and the Jewish Community Center, leaving his creative mark across western Pennsylvania. With over 100 dramatic and musical productions to his credit, Larry’s resume reflected not just volume, but consistent quality and heart.
Even after retiring from his performing arts school, Larry never truly stepped away. He continued teaching, artistic directing for the East End Kids, and directing theater for East End Productions and multiple high school programs.
One former student shared a heartfelt tribute, remembering him as her director for Brigadoon in 1994 and a longtime dance teacher, ending with the words, “RIP Mr. Cervi, I’m sure you are dancing in Heaven.”
Larry Cervi leaves behind an enduring legacy of mentorship, artistry, and unwavering belief in young people. His curtain may have closed, but the stage he built in the hearts of his students will remain forever lit.
