Truman Greaves, 19, of Zionsville, Indiana, Dies by Suicide in West Lafayette

Truman James Greaves, 19, of Zionsville, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly earlier this March in West Lafayette.

A freshman at Purdue University’s Honors College, Truman was studying engineering and had already shown remarkable promise in both academics and community involvement. Friends, family, and professors remember him as a bright, kind, and inquisitive young man whose impact extended far beyond his years.

Truman is survived by his mother, Andrea Jeffers Spiegelberg; his father, Christopher Greaves; his siblings, Athena and Harrison; his grandparents, Tom and Gretchen Jeffers and Lee Greaves; his stepfather, Scott Spiegelberg; his stepsiblings, Katelyn and Brie; and his two cherished cats, Boulder and Pebbles.

A gifted and driven student, Truman graduated summa cum laude from Zionsville High School in 2025 and was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

At Zionsville High, he was an active participant in debate and Model United Nations, developing skills in diplomacy, critical thinking, and leadership. He also demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit, winning first place at the START-edUP Foundational Innovate WithIN State Finals the previous summer.

Outside of academics, Truman had a love of adventure and giving back. An accomplished rock climber, he embraced challenges with determination and enthusiasm.

He was also an avid volunteer, contributing his time and energy to Habitat for Humanity, where he helped build homes and improve communities. Those close to him recall his humor, generosity, and unwavering desire to leave the world a better place.

Truman’s personality was marked by a rare combination of wisdom, empathy, and joy. He delighted in making those around him laugh, often using his quick wit and warmth to brighten the lives of friends and family.

He was deeply thoughtful, always considering how his actions could positively impact the people and world around him. Even at a young age, Truman demonstrated insight, resilience, and a capacity for kindness that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

In the wake of his passing, Truman’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Boone County/Zionsville chapter of PFLAG or World Central Kitchen—organizations that reflect his values of inclusivity, compassion, and service.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church on Saturday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Eric M.D. Bell Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Friends, classmates, and members of the Zionsville and Purdue communities are encouraged to keep Truman’s family in their thoughts and prayers.

Though his life was tragically cut short, Truman James Greaves left a profound legacy through his accomplishments, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him. His bright spirit and unwavering commitment to bettering the world will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
